Shagya-Arabian

NORTH AMERICAN SHAGYA-ARABIAN SOCIETY
Rio Bravo / Wineglass Ominous / Murad

Sire Rio Bravo is a robust, easy-going stallion by the Shagya-Arabian stallion Janos. Janos was a successful endurance horse in AERC in the US, accomplishing over 1000 AERC miles in only three years of competition before he was sold out of the country. Janos was a stout, calm, black Shagya-Arabian, and Rio carries his same calm demeanor and stoutness. At a solid 15h, Rio adds bone and steadiness. He was approved for breeding in 2006.

The foal’s dam Backwoods Perfect brings the best of German Shagya-Arabian breeding (6 of 8 ancestors in the third generation) and combines it with impeccable US foundation stock. From the well-known dressage-bred stallions Shagal, Shaman, and Amor she inherits height, bone, and lovely movement. From Oman and Gazal VII she inherits elegance and toughness as well as jump. Finally, from Bajar—one of the few Shagya-Arabians whose jumping talent led to his licensing by the Holsteiner Verband—she gets power and scope. As with most Shagya, she is highly people-orientated and is kind, gentle, and sweet, with easy rideability.

Breeding Notes

The foal has a whopping 20 crosses to the stallion Gazal VII, arguably the best Shagya-Arabian stallion of the 20th century, leading to a blood percentage of 14%. Gazal VII was a purebred Shagya-Araber foaled in 1944.  He was sent to stud in Germany at age 23, and produced 19 licensed sons which were used widely in many warmblood breeding programs. His stallion performance test report stated “It is noticeable that at the hard stallion performance test all Gazal VII sons are in the top group and are superior by hardness, athletic elasticity and outstanding jumping potential and estimation skill”. Multiple crosses to the elite stallions Jeremias, Bajar, Amor, and Pamino ensure rideability and lovely gaits as well as jumping potential. Finally, the elite mares Babolna (dam of the approved stallions Titan, Bakony, Bartok, Balaton, and O’Bajar, the last three designated elite stallion), and Pamina (dam of the approved stallions Palmyro, Pamino, Paridos, Paris, and Priamos) round off the bloodline with extraordinary genes.
