Partbred Shagya-Arabian x Holsteiner foal due 2026, bred for eventing and showjumping

Shagya-Arabian/Holsteiner

NORTH AMERICAN SHAGYA-ARABIAN SOCIETY
Bugatti Eclat SH / Cassini II / Carpaccio

This mating brings Shagya-Arabian bloodlines back to Holsteiner sporthorse breeding through a strategically designed F1 cross. The proposed foal will carry concentrated genetics from its Shagya-Arabian foundation—Bajar, O’Bajar, Shandor, and Gazal VII—and combine them with Holstein jumping royalty: Caletto II, Cor de la Bryère, Landgraf I, and Capitol I. Much as it did earlier in Holstein’s trajectory, these bloodlines all intersect through the Anglo-Arabian Ramzes X, a 1.50m jumper out of a Shagya-Arabian dam who founded a jumping dynasty in Holstein and a dressage dynasty in Westphalia.

The breeding targets eventing as the primary discipline, leveraging world-class endurance genetics for cross-country, consolidated jumping technique for the show jumping phase, and exceptional documented movement from both parents for dressage. Both partners throw size—the dam stands 168 cm (16.2h) with 21.5 cm cannon, the sire line produces offspring around 160 cm (15.3h) with documented bone—predicting an offspring of 163–168 cm (16.0–16.2h) with substantial bone for upper-level eventing demands.

Beyond the competition career, should the foal prove a filly, she will stand as the foundation mare for a multi-generational breeding program. Bred to Holsteiner jumping sires across F2, F3, and subsequent generations, the maternal line will progressively consolidate jumping genetics while retaining Shagya-Arabian contributions: endurance capacity, temperament, and soundness.

Historical Precedent

The Holstein breed’s historical incorporation of Shagya-Arabian blood created some of its most successful lines. This is not experimental breeding—it is a return to proven methodology.

Bajar, a purebred Shagya-Arabian foaled in 1969, was used for 1,190 mares across multiple breeds—a record for a Shagya-Arabian—and produced over 800 descendants documented as “all talented in jumping” with “very good character.” Twenty-four of his sons were licensed across European studbooks. Dr. Ekkehard Frielinghaus noted that Bajar was “the only [stallion] since Ramzes [to have] a similar ability to pass his performance ability to his descendants.”

Two F1 crosses from Shagya-Arabian sires demonstrate the success of this combination at advanced jumping levels:

Bachus (Bajar × Olympia by Rasputin), 169 cm (16.2½h): Licensed Holsteiner 1991. Competed to 1.50m (S***) with 138 starts and 138 placings. Produced 172 offspring including 28 at S*** level and 6 licensed sons.

Bakar DKG (Bazar × Unique Fleur by Diamant de Semilly), 171 cm (16.3h): Siegerhengst (Champion) at the VZAP Körung 2022. Now standing at Marbach State Stud—Germany’s oldest state stud, founded 1514. International career at 1.40m–1.45m including a win at CSI3* Nörten-Hardenberg in May 2019.

Both Bachus and Bakar are F1 crosses from Shagya stallions on quality warmblood mares—the same configuration as the proposed foal.

Eventing Suitability

Dressage: The movement genetics from both parents—Karol’s Walk score of 9 at NASS inspection, Cascarpa’s +2 across impulsion/thrust/balance metrics in her Oldenburg linear profile—provide exceptional foundation for dressage work. Bugatti’s spontaneous collection aptitude suggests the biomechanics for upper-level movements are genetically present.

Show Jumping: The consolidated technique genetics (9.38% Caletto II, 5.47% Cor de la Bryère, 3.91% Landgraf I) provide jumping form and carefulness. Technique often matters more than raw power in eventing show jumping, where courses test rideability rather than maximum height.

Cross-Country: This is where the Shagya-Arabian contribution provides decisive advantage. Bugatti’s paternal grandsire Carol competed at FEI 2* endurance. His great-grandsire Alto de Traclin was ranked #1 in the world for FEI endurance in 2022. Combined with Cascarpa’s +3 cooperativeness (maximum score), the cross-country phase should be this horse’s greatest strength.

Breeding Notes

Although an F1, the foal comes from two consolidated pedigrees that each contribute to the qualities we expect. The two primary duplications are the Holsteiner stalwart Caletto II in the 4th and 5th generation at 9%, and the Shagya-Arabian foundation stallion Shandor in the 4th and 6th generation at almost 8%. According to Christopher Hector, “Caletto II was a sensation right from the start and was acclaimed Champion of his stallion licensing in 1980—he was considered the perfect Holsteiner type. He also showed wonderful jumping technique, and later proved this in the showjumping ring with Herbert Blöcker, where the stallion won many tests for riding horses.”

He was described thus in the Stallion Book of the Holsteiner Warmblood Breed by Dr Dietrich Rossow: “Significant stallion of Thoroughbred, performance type. Harmonious and deep bodied. Smooth topline, Slightly herring gutted. Muscling not well let down through the haunches. Clean, correct legs and feet. Good walk and trot, absolutely marvellous canter. Very good jumper. Extraordinary form over fences, brilliant with knees. Good temperament.”

Other Holsteiner greats in the foal’s pedigree include Ladykiller xx, Cor de la Bryère, and the Anglo-Arabian Ramzes X, discussed above. Three lines to Bajar in the 6th and 7th generation should enhance the fresh infusion of Shagya-Arabian blood contributed by Flash.
