Purebred Shagya-Arabian foal due 2026, bred for eventing

Shagya-Arabian

NORTH AMERICAN SHAGYA-ARABIAN SOCIETY
Olivero / Wineglass Ominous / Murad

*Olivero is a purebred Shagya-Arabian stallion, born 2006, bred by Walter Tautermann of Irsee, Germany, imported to Canada by Shannon McCracken, and standing at Annorien Sporthorses in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His sire, Taib Gazlan, received very high scores and was proclaimed Reserve Champion at his licensing in Neustadt Dosse, where the judges specifically commended his nobility, harmony, and rideability—awarding him a score of 10 for character. Taib Gazlan is by the elite stallion Tibor, bred by Ruth Pack at Reichshof Stud, for many years one of the most important Shagya-Arabian breeding stations in Germany. Tibor’s sireline represents classical Bábolna bloodlines descending from Gazal VII and the elite mare Babolna, while his dam is Tatjana, an elite mare and outcross carrying highly-regarded Romanian endurance bloodlines. The depth of *Olivero’s female ancestry is notable: in the third generation, all four of his female ancestors are elite mares—Tatjana, Ayda, Nedda, and Dalileh.

*Olivero’s dam Obeya is by Navarra, whose dam Nedda appears twice in his pedigree through her sons Navarra and Nasrallah, both elite stallions. Obeya is a full sister to the approved stallion Orpheus II and is characterized by typey appearance with fine, dry, and elegant limbs; her dam Oya was approved in the ZSAA studbook with high scores and produced quality offspring. Obeya’s damline is largely Danish, with the stallion Edhem bred by Ulla Nyegaard and the mare Dalileh imported to Denmark by Nyegaard from Topolcianky in Slovakia. *Olivero’s pedigree is therefore a convergence of the original Shagya studfarms founded by the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1789—Bábolna in Hungary, Radautz in Romania, and Topolcianky in Slovakia. He stands 15.1½h (156cm) with 19.0cm bone, and his production record consistently exceeds his own stature, with documented offspring including Sahara SM (16.1h), Once Upon a Baelfire (16.0h), and Sadiyah SM (15.2h).

Backwoods Perfect (“Edie”) is a purebred Shagya-Arabian mare, born April 21, 2016, in the United States, bred by Holly and Andrew Haddenham. She stands 15.3h (160cm) with 19.5cm bone. Her sire, Wineglass Ominous, is by Oman (by O’Bajar, 16h, Germany 1982) out of Wineglass Madeira; from this paternal line Edie inherits elegance, toughness, and jump, including the influence of Bajar—one of the few Shagya-Arabians whose jumping talent was recognized by the Holsteiner Verband, which licensed him for use in warmblood breeding. Her dam, RAA’s Perry, is by Murad (by Shaman/Sharif D, by Pamino/O’Bajan XX) out of Philomena (by Jeremias out of Pythia). From the well-known dressage-bred stallions Shagal, Shaman, and Amor she inherits height, bone, and movement quality. From Gazal VII she inherits the elasticity and scope the line is documented to produce across every generation. Edie is highly people-oriented, kind, and gentle, with easy rideability characteristic of the O’Bajan temperament inheritance. At her TANA inspection she received 52.5 points, was appointed premium mare candidate, and High Point non-Trakehner mare, approved Book 1.

Edie has produced two purebred Shagya-Arabian foals prior to this mating: a 2024 colt by Wineglass Dionysus (Max / Budapest / Atmandu ox), and a 2025 filly by Rio Bravo AF (Janos / Hungarian Bravo / Alcibiades ox)—the latter is Poppy JSI, currently projected to exceed 16.1h. This production record confirms that Edie carries size genetics that are not limited by her own 15.3h phenotype.

This cross unites two pedigrees saturated with the same foundational genetic material—Gazal VII, Bartok, Babolna (O’Bajan XIII-12), Nedda, and the O’Bajan lines—through independent descent paths, producing 18 crosses to Gazal VII and a COI of 4.4476%. *Olivero’s documented correction of coupling (Bartok topline transmission) addresses Edie’s single structural vulnerability at the lumbosacral junction, while her 19.5cm bone and rectangular frame provide the constitutional base the cross requires.

Breeding Notes

The structural centerpiece of this cross is the Bartok linebreeding, which concentrates at position 4S × 5D. Bartok (Gazal VII × Babolna) was documented for massive topline and muscular strength—the precise traits that address the lumbosacral coupling vulnerability visible in Edie’s Canter score of 6.5. *Olivero, as a grandson of Bartok through Taib Gazlan’s Tibor line, transmits this topline reinforcement directly. The Breeding Dossier assessment projects the LS Gap score improving from Edie’s 2.5 to 3.5 in the foal, protecting the offspring’s ridden longevity and preventing the coupling-related attrition common in horses asked to collect before their core musculature is mature.

The Gazal VII saturation—18 crosses, 17.38% blood percentage—provides the elasticity that prevents the Bartok bone mass from becoming a mechanical liability. Gazal VII’s stallion performance test record documented that his sons were consistently in the top group at hard performance tests, superior in hardness, athletic elasticity, and jumping potential. This makes the 18-cross concentration a specific and documented mechanism for scope, not merely a numerical artifact of shared ancestry. Alongside the Gazal VII foundation, the pedigree carries meaningful concentrations of Babolna (O’Bajan XIII-12), dam of approved stallions Titan, Bakony, Bartok, Balaton, and O’Bajar, and Nedda (24 Jussuf VII), dam of elite stallions Nasrallah and Navarra—both of whom appear in *Olivero’s pedigree and represent the O’Bajan rideability inheritance that anchors the foal’s amateur suitability.

Edie’s production record adds a layer of validation that her phenotype alone does not convey. Her 2025 filly Poppy JSI, by Rio Bravo AF, is projected to exceed 16.0h, demonstrating that Edie carries size genetics through the Wineglass/O’Bajan foundation that express in the offspring rather than the dam. *Olivero’s own production record—Sahara SM at 16.1h, Once Upon a Baelfire at 16.0h, both from mares of similar caliber—confirms consistent size-positive transmission from a 15.1½h stallion. Together these production records are the primary evidence base for the 15.3h–16.1h height projection; the parental phenotypes alone would suggest a narrower and lower range.

The breeding goal is a purebred Shagya-Arabian with a rectangular, sport-horse frame at 16.0h or approaching it, 19cm+ bone, the Lapis Filter temperament profile required for an amateur eventing career, and the constitutional durability—bone density, coupling strength, metabolic efficiency—that defines the breed’s historic mandate.
