Ariel is one of the few offspring of the Grand Prix stallion Abrikos. Abrikos began his Grand Prix career under Tina Konyot with many successes. In 2006, a syndicate purchased Abrikos for Denielle Gallagher-LeGriffon. Together they went on to CDI Grand Prix success at Dressage at Devon, the Royal Winter Fair and many more competitions. In 2008, Abrikos and Denielle were short listed for the Canadian Olympic Dressage Team. Abrikos’s sire Agdam, is the son of the great Russian Olympic star Absent. Absent was the Olympic Dressage Gold medal winner in 1960. In 1964, he won Bronze under Sergei Filato and was fourth in 1968 under Ivan Kalita. Absent also had a record at the track with 5 starts as a two-year-old.

Ariel is part of the reconstruction project of the Russian Warmblood or Orlov-Rostopchin breed, undertaken in the US by Dr. Barbara Weber of Solstice Farms. The history of the Orlov-Rostopchin dates back to the middle of the 18th century, when Russia was breeding horses not only for carriage and military use, but also for dressage riding. Through its associations with the French court, the Tsarist upper class was introduced to and practiced horsemanship as an artistic pursuit, and the foremost breeders of that day were called upon to develop a riding horse which was to be the horse of the Russian court (Catherine the Great is said to have enlisted the talents of the Orlov brothers from the prominent land-owning family of the day). Some of the initial foundation blood of this horse is shared with the Orlov Trotter, but the riding and driving breeds diverged as specific lines were formed.

Conformation Notes

Ariel has correct conformation, with a strong foundation, great feet, and harmonious frame. She has a medium-set neck, good pillar of support, steep shoulders, medium-angled humerus, a longer ilium than femur alignment, medium stifle placement, and a fair alignment between her point of hip and the lumbosacral gap. She has a great topline and saddle position. Points to correct include her shoulder, which is too steeply angled; her profile, which could use more refinement and nobility; plus a bit more bone.
