Trakehner Warmblood
TRAKEHNER ASSOCIATION OF NORTH AMERICA
Hirtentanz / Pajou / Northern Mystic xx
The foal’s sire is the Trakehner elite and premium stallion EH Hirtentanz, declared the 2023 Stallion of the Year by the Trakehner Verband. Hirtentanz is a coal-black stallion with the white splash gene bred by Veronika von Schöning and standing at Aquafarms in Florida, owned by Joe Pimentel. Herbie’s sireline comes from the elite stallions Axis and Sixtus and goes to the legendary Trakehners Habicht, Burnus AA, and to the Shagya stallion Lapis, who famously carried his German cavalry officer through enemy lines and the perils of the Russian winter, sometimes having only the straw from thatched cottage roofs to suffice as fodder. Lapis survived the 6000 km ordeal healthy and sound, and has become a cornerstone in Trakehner and Shagya breeding.
EH Hirtentanz is out of the elite, premium, and state premium mare Herzlani, one of the greats of the Trakehner breed, who produced another licensed stallion competing at Grand Prix level in dressage, Heinrich der Welfe by the Grand Prix stallion Hohenstein. This mareline is comprised of three elite mares in a row and includes the black Trek mares Herbstzeit and Herbstzeitlose, both bred at the famed Trakehnen Stud in East Prussia. It ultimately goes back in an unbroken line to the Arabian mare Fatme ox born 1787, originator of the Stammstute der Trakehner Familie Nr. T14 (Alte Trakehner Hauptgestütsfamilie Nr. 177).
The foal’s dam is Pegasus of Solstice, a rare daughter of Pajou, a product of the famed Castell Imperator Hof, started by the Barton family upon their emigration from East Prussia to the United States. Pajou was described at his stallion approval as a “black stallion of the elegant riding horse type with large frame, typey exterior and a very beautiful face with large eyes.” He was by Avignon II, a son of the thoroughbred mare Arcticonius xx, arguably the best Thoroughbred mare ever to be used in a German Warmblood breeding program. Pegasus is beautiful, elegant, and athletic, with a lovely temperament: we’ve put children and beginners on her back and she’s always been gentle and considerate, taking good care of them and giving them confidence in handling/riding horses. She’s also highly people-orientated and loves spending time with humans.
Through Pegasus’ dam Dancing in the Sun xx, she is descended from one of the greatest racehorses of the 20th century, Northern Dancer through his son Northern Mystic. In the first four generations of her pedigree, Pegasus has nine Black-Type winners out of 14 total ancestors. She was bred by Dr. Barbara Weber of Solstice Farms, who has worked for the last 25 year to restore the rare Orlov-Rostopchin or Russian Warmblood breed based on her foundation stallion Iskusnik. The latter was an Elite-1 stallion bred by the Starozhilovsky Stud, declared the best two-year-old colt of his year.
The foal is expected to reach 16’2 h, and will be slated for a career in showjumping and eventing.

TRAKEHNER WARMBLOOD
BORN 2002
BREEDER: DR. BARBARA WEBER, SOLSTICE FARMS

Breeding Notes
The foal has sex-balanced linebreeding to the stallion Flaneur in the sireline (one son and one daughter in the seventh generation) plus a further cross in the fourth generation of the damline, leading to blood percentage of almost 8%. Moreover, three crosses to the famous Trakehner stallion Ibikus round out the pedigree, ensuring beautiful type, rideability, and hardiness (in fact, we believe the talent and rideability that characterize double-gold Olympic champion Valera comes in part from linebreeding to Ibikus). Finally, five crosses to Maharadscha at 5% blood percentage add beauty, elegance, and rideability. Maharadscha was of great importance to the Trakehner breed in the post-World War II period, as a grandson of the significant Arabian stallion Fetysz ox. Maharadscha sired 11 graded sons and 82 studbook mares, including German Elite mare Abiza (dam of Abdullah) and Fawiza (dam of Falke and Fabian). The German Stallion Book lists the following comments: ‘Extraordinarily beautiful, expressive stallion with Arabian stamp, but in a large format. Very pretty face, much neck, thoroughly sufficient girth; the way of going is elastic and swinging; the stallion shows the best inclination for riding.”
